So school is starting for a lot of people, and my semester begins Sept. 2nd. I have 2 classes, 4 days per week. Both classes are related to my major for once. And I have no motivation to go. I've worked all summer and made more money than I've ever had. I've learned more from work than I have in 3 years at college. Ex: I'm certified to use electric pallet jacks and often offload trucks on Wednesday nights. What have I learned from college? Drawing a blank there. I get raises every couple of months which is nice. Basically, having a job, to me, means I work hard and get a decent check at the end of the week. Being in school means I work hard and get nothing to show for it. It's been superb being able to afford car parts and other stuff now, hell I'm close to being able to afford moving out. Having a job is what got me a credit card with a decent credit score too. I'm really tempted to just have this be my last semester and maybe talk to a family member who works in a garage fixing Nissans if I can do an internship for a few hours per day and then go to work. Maybe it's because I learn by doing so a classroom setting is not great but fuck me these next couple months will suck.

Have a recent high res shot of my Cube along with other Nissans:

If you're one year away from a diploma don't not get it now. I just graduated and let me tell you its nice. Just my 0.02 cents.

I'm not one year away though. I have no idea how many years away I am. I'm the only person in my program now so the school is refusing to let professors offer the classes I need, even as independent studies.

I feel the same. I really have learned very little, but at least I have the consolation of my degree making me quite employable (mech engineering). At this point I'm finishing out the year and seeking work, most have done a higher level 4 year course or a year out in industry but I just want to get out and earn a living.

Get your diploma you knumbskull!

Then you can do whatever you want but you'll have a diploma to pay for instead of owing for nothing.

Definitely do not quit if you're 1 year away from graduation. Also, you may think you make a lot now, but just wait until you graduate. Unless you picked a shitty major. But you'll still probably make more than working on Nissans all day.

Just ask my friend who skipped out on college to work at a Harley dealer, only to find out that to do anything other than detailing he needs at least a 2-year degree. Now he has to wait until next year to enroll in a lot of his classes.

A diploma can help a LOT, but if the university is actively trying to prevent you from getting one, then it might be worth it to switch to a university where your credits carry over AND they will let you get a diploma.

Well that is shitty … but still, Im about to finish my internship and jump from $15-30/hr. Just because of a piece of paper (and that knowledge yo).

College functions as an economic signal. See if you can transfer your major to something more helpful to you and maybe you can use it towards managing other mechanics someday. Then rock some technical school and get certifications.

Provided you've chosen a proper major, school isn't about learning, it's about having something substantial that represents to employers that you can be taught, that you can function well with others and within the confines of a system that may not be perfectly tailored to you, and that you can see a long-term investment through.

I think a lot of people go through freak-out moments during school, especially 3 years in (I know I did), but discarding the future earnings potential that a proper degree (notice that I'm stressing the proper degree part of all this) can afford you for the short-term benefits of a decent-paying unskilled position isn't prudent in the long-term, especially when you're 3 years in.

At the end of the day, though, that's all reliant on your degree field being one in which a degree is a necessity for an entry-level position and one in which there's demand for new hires. If neither of those is true and you've found alternative non-degreed career paths, then it's time to bolt anyway, as there's no reason to simply waste time and money in college getting a degree that doesn't add value to your career prospects.

School sucks, and it might not feel like there's any immediate payoff. But there are so many jobs out there that require some kind of college degree. While it might be tempting in the short term to say screw school and go to work, you'll find that down the road if you want to advance, having the degree makes a huge difference in your ability to find a job.

Given the job market these days, you essentially NEED that piece of paper. It is not an absolute requirement, but you will have a hard enough time getting the jobs you want with it; let alone without. College can often seem like it offers very little reward at the time, but that's because it's about the long term benefits. Trust me, if you quit and just start working then your potential earnings will likely be much much lower than if you graduated.

All through college I had friends who were working technical jobs or just continuing on at places they'd worked in through high school. They were making decent money, and had lots of fun toys to show for it. Meanwhile, I was driving my same 2000 Corolla I had in high school and my big boy toys were minimal. It was incredibly frustrating.

You know where they are now though? Same place they were then, making the same amount of money (maybe slightly more), still have some cool stuff, but they've settled into a grove. Plateaued if you will. Whereas, I am at the beginning of my career, making more money than nearly all of them, in an amazing job that I love, and with seemingly endless potential to advance and achieve even more.

Stick with it, and it will be worth it in the end.

The question is whether you're one year away if you change majors. I choose a college for a specific program and then they made that professor a Dean. I had to do some scrambling but I found another major I could shift into that let me get out in a reasonable amount of time and have more fun.

Diplomas open doors while jobs tend to pigeonhole. There's also a virtual ceiling to potential earnings without a diploma with very few exceptions. Unless you'd be happy doing what you're doing today 40 years from now (that'd be 2054...think how long that is) then just muscle through school.
